Hyperthermia therapy is a treatment used in killing cancer by heating tumors. The heating feels about as warm as a hot tub. Research has shown that heat can damage or kill cancer cells in some tumors while also making radiation therapy more effective in treating some tumors that are "recurrent" or "progressive" despite conventional therapy, which occurs in 50% of all cancer patients resulting in death.
There are 2 main ways in which hyperthermia can be used:
Local hyperthermia (or thermal ablation) is used to heat a very small area, such as a tumor. This involves creating very high temperatures that destroy (ablate) the cells that are heated. Radio waves, microwaves, ultrasound waves, or other forms of energy can be used to heat the area. The heat is normally applied externally which uses high energy waves that are aimed at a tumor near the body surface from a high technology theraputic source outside the patients body.
Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is probably the most commonly used type of local hyperthermia. It uses high-energy radio waves for treatment and is placed next to the tumor for a short time. Placement of this therapy is guided by ultrasound or CT scans. The treatment head releases a high-frequency current that creates heat (best between 110 and 116°F) and destroys the cancer cells. RFA is sometimes used to treat tumors in the liver, and is being used in several other areas of the body by advanced cancer institutes or cancer treatment clinics.
The main advantage of hyperthermia is that it is non-invasive and seems to make other forms of cancer treatment work much better. By heating cancer cells to temperatures above normal (up to as high as 110°F) makes them easier to destroy using certain natural or chemotherapy drugs. The most notable scientists agree that hyperthermia works best when the cancer area being treated is kept within an exact temperature range for a certain period of time, there by keeping an area at a constant temperature without affecting nearby tissues. Not all body tissues respond the same way to heat -- some are more sensitive than others. So monitoring the temperature at a specific site within the body is always done, to be sure the temperature always stays within the desired cancer killing range.

Extensive research and clinical trials have made hyperthermia therapy what it is today. Many clinical studies on hyperthermia and radiation therapy have been conducted and results have varied. Warning signs of breast cancer:
- A lump or thickening in or near the breast or in the underarm area.
- A change in the size or shape of the breast.
- Nipple discharge or tenderness, or the nipple is pulled back or inverted into the breast.
- Ridges or pitting of the breast. The skin looks like the skin of an orange.
- A change in the way the skin of the breast, areola, or nipple looks or feels. For example, the skin may be warm, swollen, red, or scaly.
You should see your doctor about any symptoms like these. Most often, they are not cancer, but it's important to check with the doctor so that any problems can be diagnosed and treated as early as possible.
Some women believe that as they age, health problems are due to "growing older." Because of this myth, many illnesses go undiagnosed and untreated. Don't ignore your symptoms because you think they are not important or because you believe they are normal for your age. Talk to your doctor.

Testing and Diagnosis of Breast Cancer
Most cancers in their early, most treatable stages do not cause any symptoms. That is why it's important to have regular tests to check for cancer long before you might notice anything wrong.
During a clinical breast exam, the doctor or other health care professional checks the breasts and underarms for lumps or other changes that could be a sign of breast cancer. A mammogram is a special x-ray of the breast that often can detect cancers that are too small for a woman or her doctor to feel.
Several studies show that mammography screening has reduced the number of deaths from breast cancer. However, some other studies have not shown a clear benefit from mammography.
Scientists are continuing to examine the level of benefit that mammography can produce. For the time being, the National Cancer Institute recommends the following:
- If you are a woman in your 40s, you should have mammography screening every one to two years.
- If you are a woman age 50 and older, you should have mammography screening every one to two years.
- If you are a woman who is at higher than average risk for breast cancer, you should seek expert medical advice about whether to begin screening before age 40 and how often to have screening mammography.
Between 5 and 10 percent of mammogram results are abnormal and require more testing. Most of these follow-up tests confirm that no cancer was present.
If needed, the most common follow-up test a doctor will recommend is called a biopsy. This is a procedure where a small amount of fluid or tissue is removed from the breast to make a diagnosis. A doctor might perform fine needle aspiration, a needle or core biopsy, or a surgical biopsy.
With fine needle aspiration, doctors numb the area and use a thin needle to remove fluid and/or cells from a breast lump. If the fluid is clear, it may not need to be checked out by a lab.
For a needle biopsy, sometimes called a core biopsy, doctors use a needle to remove tissue from an area that looks suspicious on a mammogram but cannot be felt. This tissue goes to a lab where a pathologist examines it to see if any of the cells are cancerous. In a surgical biopsy, a surgeon removes a sample of a lump or suspicious area. Sometimes it is necessary to remove the entire lump or suspicious area, plus an area of healthy tissue around the edges. The tissue then goes to a lab where a pathologist examines it under a microscope to check for cancer cells. Doctors are studying another type of surgical biopsy that removes less breast tissue. It is called an image-guided needle breast biopsy, or stereotactic biopsy. If approved for general use, it would become an important surgical tool.
Eighty percent of U.S. women who have a surgical breast biopsy do not have cancer. However, women who have breast biopsies are at higher risk of developing breast cancer than women who have never had a breast biopsy.
Other techniques used to find cancer include a new way of reading mammograms called digital mammography. Magnetic resonance imaging, or MRI, and ultrasound are two other techniques which researchers think might detect breast cancer with greater accuracy.
At present rates, breast cancer (the most common site of cancer among females) will affect one out of every eight women. Fortunately, it is one of the most detectable cancers thanks to mammography. If found and treated early while localized to the breast, the five-year survival rate is over 90 percent. Women most at risk are those over age 50 and those who have already had breast cancer. Some families have a predisposition for breast cancer. An estimated 1,600 males are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
